Kleya Tour to Évora, with Marie Vaz Moreira

In a trip to beautiful Évora, a UNESCO heritage city with a unique architectural and gastronomic richness in central Alentejo, I decided to visit some of the megalithic monuments located only a few kilometers from the city centre . ..

First, we visited the Almendres menhir, and of course I had to try my luck with my unsuccessful Obelix moment, it did not move an inch. This is an impressive element due to its scale. There are many in the region, and this one has a staff engraved in its upper section, clearly a sign of the importance of nature in the Neolithic period, namely the domestication of animals.

The Almendres Menhir is quite close to the Almendres Cromlech and both are closely related. Seen from the Cromlech, the menhir indicates the sunrise on Midsummer (the largest day of the year).

I was overwhelmed by the size and historic burden of the Almendres Cromlech, which is said to be the largest megalithic monument in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest in the world, 2000 years older than the famous Stonehenge in Britain… it was built about 7000 years, when  mankind made the transition in Western Europe from hunter-gatherers to shepherds and farmers.

Nowadays, the Cromlech of Almendres, very close to Évora, has approximately one hundred monoliths. Over time, there have been changes and additions to the original horseshoe-shaped plant.

It is quite easy to find by following the directions from the village of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. This is a calm and very beautiful place in the middle of cork oaks, a unique and unforgettable peaceful landscape.
