Golf in Portugal

Are you looking for an exciting golf destination with great courses and a sunny climate?

Then you need to experience Portugal’s golf courses. From the fresh mountain air and lush countryside in the north to the famous beaches and fantastic weather in the south, visitors will be delighted to discover outstanding golf courses in

picturesque natural surroundings that won multiple awards.

Our first golf club – Oporto Golf Club - was founded in 1890 by the English community in Porto associated to the the wine industry. Much later, in the 1920’s and 1930’s other clubs appeared in Portugal: in 1922 Lisbon Sports Club, in 1934 Miramar and Vidago’s clubs, in 1937 Madeira and two years later in Azores.

Right now, we have more than 90 golf courses spread across the country and Portugal has won several awards including World’s and Europe’s Best Golf Destination for several years and Europe’s Best Golf Venue (Quinta do Lago).

We leave you with some of the best places to play golf in Portugal:

Porto and North of Portugal:

Oporto Golf Club – This was the first in the Iberian Peninsula and it’s also the place where golfers compete for the Skeffington Cup, the oldest in the world played without interruptions.

Vidago Palace - this location is characterised by the beauty of the countryside. It was also considered to be a thermal retreat for the European elite.

Lisbon:

Estoril Golf Course – was founded in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Closer to the sea, it’s the eucalyptus and pine trees that make the landscape of this beautiful place.

Oitavos Dunes – In Cascais you will find the first golf course in Europe to win the “Certified Gold Audubon Signature Sanctuary”.

Further away from Lisbon you can also discover two amazing golf courses in a rural area - Riba Golf and Santo Estêvão Golf.

Algarve Region:

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort – the first one in Algarve and it’s the only one that has three golf courses!

Quinta do Lago – Europe’s Best Golf Venue in 2016. This is one of the most luxurious tourist resorts in Europe and you can spend some quality holidays here in the 5-star Hotel Quinta do Lago.

Azores:

In the Azores you’ll find 3 golf courses, Furnas and Batalha in São Miguel Island and another one in Terceira island.

Madeira:

In Madeira, you can find PortoBay Serra Golf, Palheiro Golf and Porto Santo Golf and be amazed by the magnificent views.

Golf attracts more and more tourists to Portugal.
